Wen, Bitcoin and Solana: Invented or Discovered?

Bitcoin, Solana and a cat: an unusual comparison

Comparing Wen with Bitcoin and Solana is not a fair fight, and that is the point. This post is not about which coin is "better". It asks an older question: was crypto invented or discovered? Along the way we explain proof of work and proof of stake in plain words, look at why nobody should claim to be Satoshi, and place the Wen cat where it honestly belongs in this story.

Invented or discovered?

Every cryptocurrency stands on mathematics that existed long before it. Hash functions such as SHA-256 and elliptic curves such as secp256k1 were developed by researchers for other purposes years earlier. In that sense the building blocks were discovered — found in the landscape of mathematics.

The systems built from them were invented. Satoshi Nakamoto's 2008 white paper describes Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system: a deliberate design that solves the double-spending problem. No protocol document describes itself as something unearthed. The romance of "discovery" lives in the community's imagination — which is fine, as long as we know which part is poetry.

Bitcoin in a nutshell

  • 2008: the white paper by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto.
  • 2009: the network starts; the first block is mined.
  • Keys: signatures on the secp256k1 elliptic curve.
  • Mining: proof of work based on the SHA-256 hash function.
  • Confirmations: a payment is usually treated as settled after about six blocks, roughly an hour.

Proof of work and proof of stake, in plain words

Proof of work (PoW)Proof of stake (PoS)
Who adds the next blockMiners racing to solve a computational puzzleValidators chosen in proportion to the coins they lock up as a guarantee
What protects the chainElectricity and hardware: rewriting history means redoing the workLocked capital: cheating puts the validator's own stake at risk
Energy useHighLow
SpeedSlower; minutes per blockFaster; seconds or less
ExamplesBitcoin; Ethereum before 2022Ethereum since the Merge in 2022; Cardano; Solana

Solana adds a twist called proof of history: a cryptographic clock that orders events before validators vote on them, which helps the network move quickly.

Finality: Bitcoin versus Solana

Finality is the moment a payment can no longer be undone. In Bitcoin it is probabilistic: each new block makes reversal less likely, which is why people wait for several confirmations. On Solana, validators vote on blocks continuously, and a transaction is typically confirmed within seconds.

That speed was tested in public. When WEN launched in January 2024, an enormous wave of claims hit the network at once, and Solana kept running — a story told in our post on the launch-day stress test. The original post went further and promised "no risk of balance loss" under load opinion. No system is risk-free; what the WEN launch showed is strong resilience, not a guarantee.

Where Wen fits

Wen is clearly on the invented side. In January 2024 Meow, co-founder of Jupiter, wrote the poem "A Love Letter to Wen Bros". It was minted as an NFT using the Wen New Standard (WNS) — not "Wen Name Service", as the original post said — and fractionalized into one trillion tokens, so that owning WEN means owning a piece of the poem. The tokens were airdropped to more than one million eligible wallets; how many actually claimed, and how much was burned afterwards, is reported differently by different sources figures differ.

So Wen is not a "discovered" evaluation system and not a rival to Bitcoin. It is a cultural experiment that runs on Solana's fast, low-cost rails — and a technical one, because WNS showed a lightweight way to build NFTs on Token-2022. Our Wen Open Lab turns that heritage into free, tested models.

Why nobody should claim to be Satoshi

Bitcoin's creator disappeared in 2011 and has never been identified. Part of Bitcoin's strength is exactly that: there is no founder to pressure, arrest or bribe. People who claim the name tend to discover how unforgiving the community and the courts can be — in March 2024 the High Court in London ruled that Craig Wright, who had claimed for years to be Satoshi, was not the author of the white paper.

The lesson for any project is humility. Wen has grown for a long time without advertising, carried by its community; no one needs to crown themselves to keep it alive. The original post quoted a well-known exchange founder on this topic; we could not find the quote in any source, so we have removed it.

Culture as Wen's real strength

If Bitcoin's strength is security and Solana's is speed, Wen's is culture. A cat everyone recognises, free art for anyone to use, cat accounts on X — WEN acquired @TweetsOfCats, according to a 2025 newsletter — plush toys and football tournaments. Culture is how people who never read a white paper first meet crypto.

We removed the parts of the original that talked about exchange counts, liquidity, "undervaluation" and a "bullish angle". They describe markets, not knowledge. If you want to test what you have learned instead, try the Wen quiz, or read the space tale Crypto Fantasy, where proof of stake becomes a Force.
