Solana's WEN Launch Stress Test: 100% Uptime and the Birth of WNS
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
On January 26, 2024, more than a million Solana wallets became eligible to claim a cat. The WEN airdrop — the first token on Jupiter's LFG Launchpad — sent a wave of traffic through the network unlike anything it had seen in months. Solana kept running. This post tells that story with the numbers reported on the day, explains what WNS is and why AssetDash adopted it within weeks, and shows how one memecoin launch became a rehearsal for one of the largest airdrops in crypto history.
Launch day in numbers
SolanaFloor reported the following on January 26, 2024:
| Metric | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Eligible wallets for the airdrop | more than 1,000,000 |
| Wallets active at launch time | more than 117,000 |
| Non-vote transactions, first 15 minutes | about 600,000 |
| Peak throughput | more than 2,300 transactions per second |
| Peak priority fee | 2 SOL |
| Network uptime | 100%, extending a 334-day streak without an outage |
These are figures reported at the time reported; on-chain dashboards may count slightly differently. What nobody disputes is the outcome: the chain did not halt.
What broke, what held
- The network held. Blocks kept coming; transactions kept landing, even when priority fees spiked.
- Bots were a problem. Jupiter's co-founder summed it up the same day: "we did ok, but did not do that well on the bot mitigation front today." A post-mortem followed, aimed at fairer distribution next time.
- Wallets differed. Phantom, the largest wallet, struggled to load assets and show correct balances; Solflare and Backpack stayed stable and fast through the peak.
Honest post-mortems are rare in crypto. This one turned a stressful launch into knowledge the whole ecosystem could use.
A rehearsal for $JUP
WEN was not only a memecoin; it was a dress rehearsal. Jupiter's own governance token, $JUP, was scheduled to launch on January 31, 2024 — five days later — with a far larger airdrop. Everything learned from WEN about load, bots and wallets fed straight into that launch. That is why the community likes to say that Wen is, in a sense, Jupiter's elder sibling: the cat went first. Meow's later reflections are in our post on Planetary Call #60.
WNS 0.0 in brief
The Wen New Standard is a lightweight, open-source way to build NFTs on Solana's Token-2022 program. Instead of a heavy external metadata program, it uses token extensions — metadata stored in the mint, groups and members for collections, and royalties enforced by a transfer hook. The WEN token itself is a fractionalized NFT of Meow's poem, which makes it the first and most famous asset tied to the standard.

AssetDash and the first 10K collection
Standards only matter if others use them. In February 2024 AssetDash announced "Elements", a 10,000-piece profile-picture collection minted on WNS — the first large collection on the standard, reported as arriving about eighteen days after the WEN launch reported. According to the announcement, Vanta Eternal Stakers were to receive Elements first by airdrop, then other Vanta holders could burn their Vanta NFTs for Elements, with supply capped at 10,000, once a major marketplace supported WNS.
That speed — from a poem to a standard to an outside collection in weeks — is the most useful thing the WEN launch proved.
Why it matters today
- Resilience is earned in public. A launch with a million eligible wallets is a better proof than any benchmark.
- Fairness needs engineering. Bot mitigation became a design topic for every launchpad after January 2024.
- Open standards travel. WNS was adopted by outsiders within weeks because anyone could read and use it — the same spirit as Wen Open Lab, where the standard becomes free, tested models.
The original post ended with promises such as "no risk of balance loss" and "a level above market trading". We have removed them: no system is risk-free, and this almanac describes what happened rather than what might.
