PayPay and Digital Assets in Japan: When a Payment App Builds a Bridge
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
On October 9, 2025, Japan's most popular cashless payment app, PayPay, announced that it had taken a 40% stake in the Japanese arm of a large crypto exchange. For this almanac the interesting part is not the exchange — we do not promote any — but the bridge: an everyday payment app that tens of millions of people use for groceries and trains is being connected to digital assets. This post explains what was announced, why payment apps matter, and how the same idea appears in the Solana and Wen world.
What was announced
- Who: PayPay, a SoftBank group company and Japan's leading cashless payment app with about 70 million users.
- What: a capital and business alliance; PayPay acquired 40% of Binance Japan, a registered crypto-asset exchange operator in Japan.
- Plans: letting users fund purchases of digital assets with PayPay Money and choose PayPay Money as a withdrawal option, plus jointly developed services.
- When: announced October 9, 2025.
We name the companies because they are the news. We do not link to the exchange and do not recommend any trading venue.
Why payment apps matter
Most people will never install a crypto wallet just to try one. They already have a payment app. When that app can move value to and from digital assets, the step from "curious" to "user" becomes small. That is the real story of the alliance: distribution, not technology. The same pattern appears worldwide — from QR-code apps in Asia to remittance companies such as Western Union choosing stablecoins on Solana.
Japan's careful approach
Japan regulates crypto-asset exchanges through the Financial Services Agency and local finance bureaus; operators must be registered, and customer assets must be separated from company funds. That makes partnerships like this one slower and more formal than in many countries — and, for users, more predictable. It is a reminder that "mainstream adoption" usually arrives through regulated, boring infrastructure rather than through hype.
The same idea on Solana
- Stablecoins as everyday money: Jupiter's JupUSD and Western Union's USDPT both live on Solana.
- Regulated access: staking ETFs such as BSOL let brokerage customers reach SOL without a wallet.
- Merchant tools: Solana Pay lets a shop request a payment with a simple link or QR code — the basis of the payments bridge in Wen Open Lab.
Where Wen fits
Wen is not a payment company and does not claim to be one. Its contribution is different: an open NFT standard (WNS) that can turn receipts, warranties and invoices into tokens; free, tested models that show how; and a culture that makes the technology friendly. The cost simulator in the Lab lets anyone compare network fees with card and transfer fees — a small, practical answer to the question the PayPay news raises: what would everyday digital payments actually cost?

Check before you trust: the WEN contract
The one and only WEN mint on Solana is WENWENvqqNya429ubCdR81ZmD69brwQaaBYY6p3LCpk. Compare it character by character with the Solana Explorer and the official site wenwencoin.com. A short video shows how: find the ID contract. Names, tickers and logos can be copied; the address cannot.
