Western Union Picks Solana: USDPT and a Bridge to Everyday Payments
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
On October 28, 2025, Western Union — one of the oldest names in money transfer — announced that it would issue a U.S. dollar stablecoin on Solana. The token is called USDPT, it is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank, and it comes with a new Digital Asset Network that connects crypto wallets to Western Union's cash network. For people who never understood what blockchains are for, this is a very concrete answer: sending money home.
What was announced
- USDPT — the U.S. Dollar Payment Token, a stablecoin backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars.
- Issuer: Anchorage Digital Bank, a federally chartered crypto bank in the United States.
- Network: built on Solana.
- Timing: expected to be available in the first half of 2026, accessed through partner exchanges.
- Digital Asset Network: what Western Union calls "a solution for the last mile of the crypto journey" — partnerships with wallets and wallet providers to give their users cash off-ramps through Western Union's network.
- Reach: Western Union says it serves more than 200 countries and territories, more than 130 currencies and hundreds of thousands of retail locations.
Chief executive Devin McGranahan framed the move in business terms: USDPT "will allow us to own the economics linked to stablecoins." The original post quoted him on Solana's reliability at a conference; we could not find that quote in the official release unverified.
Why it matters for remittances
Sending money across borders is still slow and expensive for millions of people. A transfer can pass through several banks, each adding fees and delays, and currency conversion eats into what the family at the other end receives. A dollar stablecoin on a fast network changes the middle of that journey: value moves in seconds, around the clock, for a tiny network fee. Western Union's cash network covers the ends — the shop where someone hands over cash, and the shop where someone else picks it up.
That is the real innovation here: not a new coin, but a bridge. Someone can receive dollars in a wallet and turn them into local cash at a familiar counter, without ever needing to understand how a blockchain works.
Why Solana
Western Union chose Solana after evaluating other networks. The reasons Solana usually gives for such choices are the same ones the Wen community has seen first-hand: very fast confirmation, fees measured in fractions of a cent, and a chain that kept running even under the record load of the WEN airdrop in January 2024. The legal backdrop matters too: in July 2025 the United States adopted the GENIUS Act, its first federal framework for payment stablecoins, which gives regulated issuers like Anchorage a clear rulebook.
Other money-transfer companies have taken different routes — MoneyGram, for example, has worked with the Stellar network and the USDC stablecoin. Payments on public blockchains are becoming a competitive field, not an experiment.
The week Solana met Wall Street
The announcement landed in the same week that Solana's first U.S. staking ETF began trading on the New York Stock Exchange — see our post on BSOL and Wall Street. One week, two very different doors: an investment product for brokerage accounts and a payment rail for families sending money home. Solana's own account celebrated both: Solana on X, October 28, 2025. The community's reaction, in one line from a Wen community post: Solana is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — remember that.
Try the idea in Wen Open Lab
You do not need to be Western Union to experiment with stablecoin payments. Wen Open Lab publishes free, tested models built on the same Solana building blocks:
- Stage 4: the payments bridge — how a shop can accept a Solana Pay payment and settle it.
- Stage 5: the cost simulator — compare network fees with traditional card and transfer fees.
- Stage 3: B2B invoices — payments with a memo that a business can reconcile automatically.
The next step on the Lab roadmap is exactly the bridge this news is about: pay in WEN, receive a stablecoin.
