More Than a Meme: the Technology Under a Memecoin
Reworked market post The original was a market post. We kept short excerpts as a record and replaced the rest with the technology underneath and how it serves people.
The original post was a "watchlist" copied from an exchange's social feed: a ranking of memecoins by market value and the promise of turning a thousand dollars into a hundred thousand. We removed the list, the promise and the exchange link. We kept one sentence, because it is true and worth building on — and then looked at what a memecoin really is underneath, and what communities can do with one besides trade it.
Memecoins are more than memes — they're community-powered movements.

First, the promise
"$1,000 to $100,000" is the oldest line in the market. It works because we only hear from the few who won; the many who lost are silent. That is survivorship bias, and any post that sells it should be read as an advertisement, not information. The cat-season mood of the time is real culture — read Cat Season — but culture is not a promise of returns.
What a memecoin is, technically
On Solana, a memecoin is not special code. It is a token mint created by the standard token program — the same program that runs stablecoins and governance tokens. A mint has a few properties that matter far more than any meme:
- Supply — how many tokens exist, and whether more can ever be created.
- Mint authority — who, if anyone, can print new tokens.
- Freeze authority — who, if anyone, can freeze accounts.
- Distribution — how tokens first reached people: a sale, a team allocation, or an airdrop.
- Extensions — with Token-2022, a mint can carry rules such as transfer fees or metadata; WNS builds NFTs with enforced royalties on exactly these extensions.
WEN's distinguishing technical fact is its launch: a public airdrop to more than a million wallets that doubled as a stress test of Solana — and its tie to the open Wen New Standard.
Five things to verify
- The mint address — names and tickers are copied every day; the address is unique.
- The authorities — can someone print more or freeze your tokens?
- The distribution — who received the supply at launch?
- The sources — are claims backed by an official site or only by screenshots?
- The pitch — any promise of multiplied money is a warning sign by itself.
Each of these can be checked on a public explorer — for WEN, start with the Solana Explorer — and in the trust chain.
What a community can build
The best answer to "is it just a meme?" is what people do with it. The Wen community made art, plush toys for charity, parties, contests and an archive — the list is in What Wen built beyond the chart. And the technology underneath can serve far more than a community: receipts, royalties and invoices, published as free models in Wen Open Lab.

The one and only WEN mint on Solana is WENWENvqqNya429ubCdR81ZmD69brwQaaBYY6p3LCpk. Compare it character by character with the Solana Explorer and the official site wenwencoin.com. A short video shows how: find the ID contract. Names, tickers and logos can be copied; the address cannot.
