Copa de los Memes: How a Meme Football Tournament Gives Crypto a Human Face
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
Crypto has a reputation problem: to many people it looks like charts, jargon and risk. The Copa de los Memes tried a different entry point — a real football tournament where memecoin communities, the Wen cat among them, played each other in front of a live crowd at Devconnect Argentina on November 19, 2025. This post is about the idea behind it: why memes and sport fit together, what the organizers built around the event, and what the Wen community can take from it.
The idea: your money and your entertainment
The organizers summed up the event with a two-part tagline: crypto as "your money" and as "entertainment". That pairing is the real subject of the tournament. Finance alone is intimidating; entertainment alone is forgettable. Put them together in a shared ritual — supporters, chants, a bracket on a wall — and a newcomer has a reason to ask what the badges on the shirts mean.
Memes have always done this work online. A meme turns a complicated idea into something a stranger can repeat. Football does the same offline: it turns a city, a club or a community into colours that anyone can understand from the stands. The Copa de los Memes simply plugged the two together, which is why it travelled so far on social media before a single match was played.
Who organized it
The tournament was run by Bitso Onchain, the decentralized trading service of Bitso, a large Latin American crypto company. According to its July 2025 launch coverage, Bitso Onchain started with a staged rollout for users in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, planned a global launch for September 2025, and offered access to more than 17,000 tokens across 14 blockchains, with network fees covered by the company. We mention this only as context for who stood behind the event; the almanac does not review or recommend trading venues, and we have removed promotional material from the original post.
On the pitch
Eight memecoin communities fielded five-a-side teams in a single-elimination bracket: WEN, WIF, Pudgy Penguins, Ponke, Shiba Inu, MOG, Turbo and Baby Doge. Wen's supporters described their style as "philosophers holding possession for the Wen goal" — a joke about patience that fits a coin literally named after the question "wen?". The full event card, with times, venue and a table of all eight teams, is in our companion post: Copa de los Memes, Nov 19: Wen plays football at Devconnect Argentina.
The early announcements placed the tournament at "Ethereum Devcon Bangkok". The event details point to La Rural in Buenos Aires, Devconnect Argentina; the companion post explains the mix-up.
The buzz, in numbers
Before match day, the organizer's main announcement passed 70,000 views on X by November 15, 2025, and Wen's own "$WEN to win on vibes alone" posts reached tens of thousands more reported. Cross-posts came from the BONK side too, with the slogan "Let's make memes great again". View counters are rough and change by the hour, so we record them as reported numbers, not as measurements.
What the numbers do show is reach outside the usual crypto bubble: Spanish-, English- and Thai-speaking accounts shared the same posters, and the event sat inside a week that otherwise belonged to Ethereum developers. Our Planetary Call #60 post describes the same multilingual energy around Jupiter on the very same day.
Three lessons for Wen
- Culture travels further than charts. A poster with a cat in football boots explains more to a stranger than any price table. That is why the Wen brand kit and our Wen Media archive are open to everyone.
- Presence beats promotion. The most memorable thing about the tournament is who showed up, not who sold what. The same principle guides Wen Open Lab: show working, free tools instead of claims.
- Fun is a door, knowledge is the room. A meme gets attention; an almanac keeps it. If the tournament made you curious, our Wen quiz is a ten-question way to find out what you already know.
A safety note for every event
Events attract imitators. Before connecting a wallet to anything a poster or a QR code points you to, check three things: the organizer's official account, the exact token address, and whether the site asks for something it should never need — a seed phrase or a private key. No genuine event, airdrop or team page ever needs your seed phrase. Our trust chain lists the checks we use, and the box below shows the one address that is WEN.
