Copa de los Memes, Nov 19: Wen Plays Football at Devconnect Argentina
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
On November 19, 2025, memes left the timeline and walked onto a football pitch. The Copa de los Memes — billed as the Battle of the Memecoins — put eight memecoin communities, $WEN among them, into a five-a-side knockout tournament at Devconnect Argentina in Buenos Aires. This post is the event card: when and where it happened, how it worked, who played, and one geographic mix-up worth clearing up for good.
When and where
- Date: Wednesday, November 19, 2025
- Time: tournament kickoff at 11:00, finals at 14:00 Argentina time (ART)
- Venue: La Rural, Buenos Aires — the central venue of Devconnect Argentina, which the Ethereum Foundation billed as the first Ethereum World's Fair
- Entry: free with registration, limited capacity
- Organizer: Bitso Onchain, the decentralized trading arm of the Latin American exchange Bitso
The organizer's directions were the best line of the whole announcement: if you are at Devconnect, you are in the right place — follow the sound of competitive chanting.
The format
The rules were short enough to fit on a scarf:
- Single-elimination tournament — lose once and you are out.
- Five-a-side teams, each representing one memecoin community.
- Winner takes all — glory, prizes and bragging rights "until the next halving".
The organizer also ran a points game for app users around the matches. We leave that part out on purpose: this almanac is about culture and technology, not about trading or betting.
The eight teams
The official line-up named eight memecoin communities. They come from different chains, which is part of the fun — the tournament was cross-chain before a single ball was kicked:
| Team | Home chain | One-line portrait |
|---|---|---|
| WEN | Solana | The cat born from Meow's poem, airdropped to over a million wallets — our team |
| WIF (dogwifhat) | Solana | A dog in a pink knitted hat |
| Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) | Solana | An NFT brand that grew into toys and a token |
| Ponke | Solana | A chaotic monkey with a gambler's grin |
| Shiba Inu (SHIB) | Ethereum | One of the oldest dog coins |
| MOG | Ethereum | Internet "mogging" culture, another cat |
| Turbo | Ethereum | A toad famously designed with the help of AI |
| Baby Doge | BNB Chain | A younger sibling of the original Doge meme |
BONK, Solana's dog and Wen's frequent partner, appeared in the promotion around the event and in cross-posts with the community not in the official line-up, but it was not among the eight named teams. We could not find a published result of the final, so we do not name a winner unverified.
Bangkok or Buenos Aires? Clearing up the mix-up
The first posts about the tournament, including our own originals, said "Ethereum Devcon Bangkok". The event details tell a different story: La Rural, Devconnect Argentina, Argentina time. The confusion is easy to explain. Devcon, the Ethereum Foundation's flagship conference, was held in Bangkok in November 2024. A year later, in November 2025, the Foundation brought its Devconnect week to Buenos Aires. Same month, same community, different city.
We have corrected the venue here and in our trust chain, where this used to be listed as "figures differ". Keeping the old wording in the original URL is the price of not breaking links; the text is what counts.
Why it matters for Wen
A memecoin is a story that a community tells together. Tournaments like this one move the story from screens into a stadium, where people can wear it, chant it and argue about it. For Wen this is natural territory: the brand is a cat that the community describes as "the internet's cutest", the art is free to use, and the strongest moments in its history were collective — a poem, an airdrop, a stress test that the whole network passed together.
It also tests something the Wen Open Lab benefits page talks about: whether a meme can carry real-world presence without turning into an advertisement. A football match is a good test. Nobody needs to buy anything to enjoy it, and everyone remembers who showed up. The cultural side of the story continues in our companion post, Copa de los Memes: how a football tournament puts a human face on crypto.
