Mastercard and Crypto, June 2025: What Really Changed
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
At the end of June 2025 the community celebrated a headline: Mastercard opens the door for its cardholders to buy crypto directly on decentralized exchanges. The original post concluded that "now everyone will be able to exchange WEN". The news was real; the conclusion was not. This post records what was announced, corrects the leap, and explains what card networks and stablecoins really change for payments on Solana.
What Mastercard announced
On June 24, 2025, Mastercard and Chainlink announced Swapper Finance: a way to buy crypto with a Mastercard directly on a decentralized exchange such as Uniswap (Mastercard press release). The roles:
- Shift4 processes the card payment and converts fiat to crypto;
- zerohash handles compliance, custody and transaction infrastructure;
- Chainlink verifies the purchase and sends the order to Swapper's smart contracts;
- XSwap powers Swapper and supplies exchange liquidity.
Mastercard framed it as a bridge for its 3.5 billion cards.
What it did not mean
- Not "everyone can now exchange WEN". The announcement named Uniswap, an Ethereum-family exchange; WEN is a Solana token.
- Not a payment system for memecoins. It is an on-ramp — a way to turn card money into crypto.
- Not Visa. The original's title mentioned Visa, but this announcement was Mastercard's.
We also removed the original's "five hypotheses" about WEN in card networks and an invented "payment index" with percentages: none had a source.
Card networks and stablecoins
The deeper change in 2025 was not memecoins on cards — it was dollars on-chain. Visa had already begun settling some payments in USDC on Solana in 2023. In July 2025 the U.S. passed the GENIUS Act for payment stablecoins, and companies moved: Western Union's USDPT on Solana, PayPay in Japan. Shares arrived too — see tokenized stocks beside the Wen cat.
What everyday crypto payments need
- A stable unit — people pay in dollars, euros or yen, not in volatile tokens.
- Fast, cheap settlement — the rails Solana provides.
- Records everyone can trust — receipts and invoices that can be checked.
- Simple on-ramps — cards and apps, like the one announced here.
The third point is where Wen's technology fits: Wen Open Lab builds receipts, invoices and a payments bridge on WNS and Token-2022 — a culture token's standard put to practical use.

Check before you trust: the WEN contract
The one and only WEN mint on Solana is WENWENvqqNya429ubCdR81ZmD69brwQaaBYY6p3LCpk. Compare it character by character with the Solana Explorer and the official site wenwencoin.com. A short video shows how: find the ID contract. Names, tickers and logos can be copied; the address cannot.
