PPP and PvP in Crypto: Zero-Sum and Positive-Sum Communities
Historical post This post records events as they were reported at the time. Facts are checked against sources; nothing here is a forecast.
Two acronyms explain a lot about crypto communities. PvP — player versus player — is the market where my gain is your loss. PPP — "player pump player", as the community calls it — is the opposite mood: people building things that make everyone who joins better off. The original post defined both and declared Wen a PPP community. Here is the idea made concrete: how to tell the two apart, and what PPP looks like when it is real.
The two terms
- PvP comes from video games. In crypto it describes short-term trading where profits come from other participants — early buyers selling to late ones.
- PPP is a community term community term for collective, long-term behaviour: helping newcomers, sharing tools and art, valuing the group's health over a quick exit. The original credited the idea to posts on an exchange's social feed; it is slang, not an industry standard.
Zero-sum and positive-sum
Game theory has older words for the same thing. In a zero-sum game the total never grows: every win is someone's loss, like a pie that can only be re-sliced. In a positive-sum game the total grows: a shared tool, a new standard or a free archive makes more pie. Trading a token is mostly zero-sum. Building with it can be positive-sum. PPP, read soberly, is a call to spend more time on the second.
How to spot a PvP trap
- Hidden early supply — a few wallets hold most of the tokens from the start.
- Bots at launch — snipers buy in the first seconds and sell to everyone after.
- Urgency — "last chance", countdowns, promises of multiplied money.
- No product — nothing to use, read, make or keep; only a chart.
The tools to check are free: see five things to verify in any token.
